Abstract
The authors analized the ages of onset of the first psychotic attacks of two groups of the paranoid schizophrenics who had received in-patients psyc¡©hiatric treatment at the Seoul National University, during the periods of Jan. 1959 to Dec. 1960, and Jan. 1973 to Dec. 1974, for the purpose of studying the effect of acculturation (westernization) in them.
The followings were the results;
1) There were no significant differences in the mean ages of the total psychiatric in-patients (31.86 vs 30.12 years old) and on the ratio of the paranoid schizophrenics to total psychiatric in-patients in the two corresponding periods (17.91 vs 17-28%).
2) There were significant differences in the mean ages of the two groups of the paranoid schizophr¡©enics upon admission (33.40 vs 26. 73 years old) and in the mean ages of onset of the two (30. 65 vs 25. 70 years old).
3) There were more patients whose age of onset were below 30, particularly between 16-20, in the group of the second period.
4) The group of the second period had more education, there were more patients who had above highschool level education.
